Volunteering

The Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur has volunteer opportunities in the following areas:

  • Animal Care
  • Office/administrative assistance
  • Outreach
  • Docent
  • Cleanup and maintenance

All those interested in taking advantage of the opportunities offered at the Care Center must fill out a volunteer application. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. New volunteers will be required to attend an orientation prior to their first shift. Additional training includes periodic training sessions covering skills and topics related to animal care are also offered to active volunteers, and hands-on training under an experienced supervisor.

Internships

We also currently offer non-paid internships consisting of spring rotations (starting in Jan-Feb) and summer rotations (starting in April-August). Interns are expected to commit 30 hours/week for a period of 10 weeks. 3rd or 4th year veterinary rotations may be shorter.

Husbandry internships are open to graduate and post-graduate candidates 18 years or over, and veterinary internships are open to candidates 18 years or over who are currently enrolled in a vet or pre-vet program.

Interns are responsible for their own transportation, housing and medical insurance. Additionally, foreign students are responsible for arranging all necessary visas and permits.
