CENTER FOR MARINE STUDIES

AT FORT MACARTHUR

The Center for Marine Studies is the educational partner of the Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur. The Center for Marine Studies provides curricular journeys for students. Students tour the facility and participate in reinforcement activities based studies on the animals treated at the care center.

The program’s activities focus on marine and environmental sciences for all students, offering close-up observation of sick or injured pinnipeds that are being rehabilitated at the Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur. Students can observe animal care, feeding procedures, and learn about the rehabilitation processes that enables these wild animals to be returned to the ocean.

Annually, 12,000 to 20,000 students spend time at the Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur observing these seals and sea lions and take part in lab activities in the classrooms. The program hopes students leave here with a love and appreciation for the life in the ocean, and a realization of how important it is to our planet that the ocean be a healthy place.

Schools may request customized curricular journeys to meet student’s needs at any level from pre-kindergarten to university. For children in grades 4 and above, two-hour tours let students participate in hands-on marine science activities. A curricular material fee is required to cover the cost of materials provided to students. The Center for Marine Studies also offers internship programs through San Pedro High School and a three-day/two-night overnight experience for students in grades 5-12.

Marine Science at Fort MacArthur is a program of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The program is one of a series of field science programs that teach students data collecting and analysis techniques, which can be used to study any environment.

School groups interested in touring the Center can contact the Director of the Center for Marine Studies, Todd Shattuck, by email at todd.shattuck@lausd.net or by telephone or fax at (310) 547-9888.
