#239 Finds New Home at The Aquarium of the Pacific In Long Beach

by Chris Villanueva

Animal #06-239, a yearling sea lion, has been transferred to a new home after a long stay at the Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur. He was admitted on September 13th, 2006 brought in from Zuma Beach where he was found to be underweight and lethargic. Soon after his arrival to The Care Center it was determined by our veterinarian Dr. Lauren Palmer that he had no vision in either of his eyes. After several months of treatment and time with his "roommate" (animal #260, who was later transferred to St. Como Zoo in Minnesota), he was deemed healthy, but unfortunately his eye problems precluded him from release. After an active search, a permanent home was finally found for him. On May 30th, 2007 he was transferred to The Aquarium Of The Pacific in Long Beach, CA, and renamed "Odin". He will undergo a 60-day stay in isolation, after which he will be able to spend time with all his new friends at the Aquarium. So a very special thanks to The Aquarium of The Pacific for all their help, and we look forward to seeing Odin in his new home soon!

#260 Arrives Safely at the Como Zoo

By Chris Villanueva

It has been a long road for #06-260, a sea lion who came to the Marine Mammal Care Center on November 24th, 2006. When he came to us, his injuries were quite severe, but he pulled through just fine. However, due to the nature of his wound it was determined that he was not a candidate for release. The people at Como Zoo in Minnesota stepped in to give him a permanent home. On Friday, April 19th, around 5a.m., he was loaded up into a tranport truck and off he went. We are very glad to hear from the animal care personnel in St. Paul that #260 ("Chino", as he is now known) is doing very well and enjoying his second chance with a new life in a loving home.
